Fire Safety Transcription

Welcome to our fire prevention detection and suppression module. Fire prevention is always the best solution and you should attempt to avoid fires if at all possible. You can eliminate hazards in your landscaping by clearing brush and trees away from your buildings. A lot of fires are caused by misplaced cigarettes, so you can require that smoking only be conducted in approved areas.

And you can have proper butt disposal stations in those areas, you can also consider having a no smoking campus to avoid this threat completely. You should also make sure that you use fire resistant building materials following all appropriate fire codes. And this is worth the extra money, especially if it prevents a fire from occurring.

Or prevents a fire from spreading when it does occur. You should also use plenum rated cabling when possible, because they are fire retardant, and are made of a low smoke material. Your goal should always be to prevent fires. You should comply with all fire codes and fire standards for your industry.

Construct your building with fire retardant materials, study, document and implement safety procedures including training for all of your employees. You should carefully store housekeeping supplies that may be combustible, in order to avoid fires from occurring. And also, you should make sure that your electrical distribution systems and all electrical work is done correctly, because a lot of times fires occur due to incorrect electrical work.

Make sure to only use certified electricians when having any electrical work done in your facility. In order to provide for the safety of your employees, it is important to detect fires quickly and alert your employees to exit the building. Smoke detectors are very common, however, steam and dust can block the sensors.

And prevent them for alerting when they should. Heat detection systems are able to detect a rise in the level of heat in a room, or detect a temperature that is above the maximum heat level. Flame sensors are quick acting, because they can set off an alert as soon as they see a flame, well before the temperature rises or smoke rises up to a smoke detector.

These types of sensors are the most expensive. You can also have human detection. Your employees can detect a fire and warn your other employees and get out of the building as soon as possible. You can trigger a fire alarm as you are escaping from the building. And once you are safely outside you can call 911 to alert the fire company.

In order to ensure your employee's safety they should not attempt to fight the fire even if there is equipment available. For the CISSP examination you should remember that you do not call 911 until you are safely outside the building. And that you should not attempt to put the fire out. The most important issue is to make sure that your individual personnel will get out of the building as quickly and as safely as possible. If someone decides to use a fire extinguisher in order to try to extinguish a flame you should make sure that they are using the correct type of fire extinguisher.

There are class A, class B, and class C fire extinguishers, as well as combination fire extinguishers. FM200 was designed to replace halon gas, because halon gas was poisonous. However, FM200 can also be considered hazardous. Aero-K and CO2 are clean alternatives which are considered to be safer for humans.

You can use sprinkler systems if appropriate, either a wet pipe or a dry pipe system, or a pre-action system or deluge. You should remember for the CISSP examination that a deluge fire suppression system is a sprinkler system that, when activated, dumps a large amount of water on a specified area.

You should consider installing an EPO or emergency power off master kill switch that will turn off all of the electricity in your facility or in a room. This will protect firefighters who may be spraying water on electrical equipment and prevent them from being electrocuted. You can also have rack mounted fire extinguishers in your server room.

in the United States, we have several classifications of fire extinguishers, and you should remember these classifications for the CISSP examination because you may see questions asking you to identify them. Class A fire extinguishers are designed to put out combustible material fires such as paper, wood, cardboard, and plastics.

An easy way to remember class A is ash because paper and wood leave ash behind. Class B fire extinguishers are designed for flammable or combustible liquids like gasoline, kerosene, oil, and grease. These liquids boil which is an easy way to remember that class B fire extinguishers are used for flammable liquids.

Class C fire extinguishers are used for electrical equipment, appliances, circuit breakers and uninterruptible power supplies. You can remember class C because they are used on electrical equipment and computers starts with C. You should never attempt to extinguish a computer fire with water, because there is a severe risk of electrical shock.

You can also use carbon dioxide or CO2 fire extinguishers on computer fires. Finally, class D fire extinguishers are used on combustible metals. Such as magnesium, potassium, sodium and titanium. There are several different types of sprinkler systems that you could use in your facility. With a wet pipe system, there is water in the pipes at all times.

And when the sensor is activated the water is deployed onto the area. With a dry pipe system, there is only air in the pipes until an action is required. And then the pipes are fed with water to the sprinkler heads. A pre action system is a two step dry pipe. If a hazard exists the pre action pipes would be filled with water. However, the water will not be released until some additional trigger occurs, such as an individual pressing a switch. Once that hazard is verified and the individual presses the switch then the water will be released. Which delays the response but can help to protect from flooding your facility if it's a false alarm.

A deluge system can flood the area with a lot of water rapidly from open heads, but this could be hazardous to your employees. These are typically seen in manufacturing facilities. And there's a picture of a deluge system at the bottom right hand side of the slide. Because of the danger of electrocution from uninterruptible power supplies, which are designed to still provide power, even when the electricity is out, you should not use sprinklers in your data centers.
